Eastern Europe

cre: Eastern Europe

During our fall semester, we had a 10 day fall break during which my friends and I decided to explore the eastern parts of Europe. We flew to Krakow, Poland where we visited Wawel Castle and from there we took the bus and trained everywhere else: we went to Auschwitz and Birkenau for a day to find out more about the concentration and death camps and we were almost stuck there. Luckily we kept our cool and managed to get the last bus back in the freezing night from Auschwitz to Krakow, from where we took an overnight train to Prague.

After a good breakfast at 6.30am, we were finally able to settle in a place with real beds (much more comfortable than the seats on the train, I must admit) and were able to explore Prague with fantastic views from the tower Powder Magazine and Prague Castle. We then took a bus to Vienna where we completely immersed ourselves in the times of Princess Sissy and Emperor Franz Joseph I: we visited Schloss Schoönbrunn and Belvedere Palace and more – all in bike !

Then we took a bus to Budapest, where we were told about the importance of Buda and Pest (who knew that these two cities were originally two different cities) and were able to admire the incredible building of the Hungarian Parliament . At the end we were able to relax in two of the amazing Turkish baths, which energized us enough to head back to Rome after 10 incredible days of crazy and mostly weak currencies (excluding the Euro).
