Volcano Time!
cre: Volcano Time!
For this weekend, we decided to keep a low profile and take a break between long walks and weekend trips. We decided to go to the Poás volcano for the day. But before that, I want to share some things I did during the week. After a long week, Tara, Allison, Julie and I went to do yoga at ULatina. There are a lot of group activities that the university offers, such as zumba, dancing, music, self-defense, etc. We didn’t even have to bring our own yoga which was lovely. For our course on health care in Latin America, we made another visit to the hospital. We were able to see the patient rooms this time and the emergency rooms. Since Clinica Biblica is a private hospital, it was very clean, quiet and with the best facilities compared to public hospitals in Costa Rica. Later we got to see the helicopter runway which was very cool.
Since we stayed here this weekend, Tara, Jingcan, Allison and I have been exploring downtown. We stopped in Chinatown for lunch and they were celebrating Chinese New Year as well. We had dim sum, which is Cantonese-style food made in small bites and traditionally served steamed or in small plates. We also shared a dish of stir-fried noodles. Overall it was quite authentic and I enjoyed it. It was a bit like home. Later we walked over to the National Theater and checked the prices in case we wanted to go next time. The architect of the building is phenomenal. We walked and shopped for the rest of the day.
The next day we took a 2 hour bus ride to the Poás volcano. When you arrive at the entrance, if you show them your student card, you will receive a student discount. I originally thought we would hike up to the volcano, but the hike is actually an asphalt road through the forest. It took us about 20 minutes to get to the volcano. When we got there it was very cloudy so it was very difficult to see the crater but once the clouds moved we were able to see the lake filled with sulfuric green at the bottom. This crater is the largest active crater in the world and it was amazing to see. After that we had to wait another 2 hours in the cold and rain for our bus. There is only one bus to San José at 2:30 am so it was a bit inconvenient as we couldn’t even leave the park for lunch. It was really cool and interesting to see, but the ride and the wait time was terrible. All in all it was a fairly relaxed weekend.
