When studying abroad in Barcelona, ​​it is almost impossible not to fall in love with the land of the sun and endless adventure. With its incredible food scene, proximity to the beach, vibrant culture and nightlife, it’s very easy to get carried away by the excitement. For those of us traveling on a college budget, these expenses can add up quickly. Fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities to experience Barcelona’s thriving atmosphere without breaking the bank!

Enjoy Barcelona’s beautiful outdoor spaces

There are a number of parks, beaches, and monuments that you can enjoy for free that offer some of the most exquisite views in the city. Parc de la Ciutadella is the perfect green escape for leisurely walks and afternoon picnics to unwind after a hectic day. Take some bocadillos from the nearest cafe, gather your friends and sit on the grass to have a good time. If you’re looking for a bit of peace and quiet, explore Montjuïc Gardens for stunning views of the city without spending a dime. On sunny days in Barcelona – and there are plenty – head to the beach for a dip in the ocean!

Soak up the culture of the museum

Barcelona is home to some of the best museums in the world, and the majority of them offer FREE entry on the first Sunday of every month! Discover the eclectic work of Pablo Picasso at the Museu Picasso in the lively El Born district, or take your dose of contemporary art at the MACBA in the creative district of El Raval.

Put on your walking shoes

If you want to save on transport, take a walk! Fortunately, Barcelona is such a beautiful city that it is best to explore it on foot. Everything is well connected and walking allows you to see much more of the city than if you opted for the underground metro. You never know what cool buildings and unforgettable sights you might encounter along the way. I found so many of my favorite restaurants, hidden squares, and colorful street art as I wandered the narrow streets of each neighborhood. Plus, the weather is almost always nice, so it’s nice to get some fresh air! If you still want to take the metro, I recommend buying the T-10 pass.

Celebrate like a local

One of the advantages of Barcelona is the constant energy and liveliness of the city. This means that there is ALWAYS something to celebrate here. There are so many public events taking place in the city throughout the year, and a lot of them are free! One of my favorites was La Mercè, one of the biggest street festivals held in Barcelona at the end of September each year. The entire city turns into a breathtaking celebration with free concerts, light shows and even the famous Castellers!
